Netflix Rundown: 9 Must Watch Shows
With all of us being home all of the time now, I get asked daily what are some must-watch movies or shows on Netflix. Look no further I have you covered for the next 60 days. I am adding a “Must See TV” section to my blog to have you covered when you need to know what is good on TV. Let me know what you think of all of these shows below if you have seen any of these. Also, if you have any suggestions for movies or tv shows that are not mentioned on this list, leave a comment and tell me why it is a must-watch. This is our blog together and I am here to gather all the information you may need so you can access it for free anytime.
If you have not signed up for email notifications for a new blog post, make sure you sign up below and include your birthday. I send out birthday emails for your special day and I will be cranking out a program for DWMAD subscribers soon. Have a look at the list below. I have included 9 tv shows with short descriptions of each as well as the genre. All of these TV shows can be found exclusively on Netflix. In case anyone has seen everything on this list, tune in to watch the highly anticipated horror/drama, Love Craft Country this Sunday, 8/16, at 9 pm est on HBO and HBO/Max. I have included a link to more information on what this show is about, here.
There is something for every age group on this list. Some of these movies and shows are made in other languages but do have English voice-overs and subtitles. Remember to update your settings in Netflix for the voiceover and subtitles. I will put a * by the ones that need subtitles and/or English voiceovers. Please don’t let this discourage you, as I feel these are some of the best shows on Netflix because they have excellent storylines and aren’t like anything we see over here on TV. I included a short description of each the category I believe they fit best in, and my rating of 1-10 as far as must-see. 10 is the best. Enjoy!
Shows

*Mortel (Sci Fi/ Suspense)

Mortel is about two guys who make a pact with a demon to find out what happened to one of the guy’s brother and possibly bring him back. They realize over the course of trying to solve the mystery the pact comes with an ultimate price the longer it is in use and now it is a race against the clock to solve the mystery and undo the pact made.
I rate this show a 9 because it is unlike anything on TV. It takes you through all the motions of horror, love, friendship, and betrayal.

*Always A Witch (Rom Com/ Sci Fi)

A Tale of two times. Takes place in Colonial Colombia. Carmen, a slave who is in a relationship with her master’s son, is being burned at the stake because his family believes she is a witch who is bamboozling their son into love. In the midst of her being burned at the stake, she learns he dies trying to defend her. She makes a deal with a wizard to go forward not backward in time to save his life. She must navigate around the modern world of Colombia to track down impossible leads to reunite them together.
This show is a solid 9 because it is unlike anything on TV. The music and cultural history are potent, the storyline and journey the characters face are beyond this world as Carmen is exposed constantly to threats of having her powers and even her life burned to ashes.
Season 1 & 2 are on Netflix now.

*3% (Sci Fi)
This show takes place in a poverty- stricken area known as the inland. It looks very post- apocalyptic. Rundown, burnt up buildings, no running water, dirty streets, and no food. The people have a survival of the fittest mentality. Until they reach 20 years old and are given one shot to pass a series of tests, where the top 3% of the candidates get to move onto the oasis called the offshore. The people who make it offshore live lavish lives forgetting about the life they left on the other side of the wall. Those that fail the series of tests are banished back to the inland forever and have lost their shot at paradise. The series of tests aren’t the only things that are tricky as the system is rigged so most will fail.

This is by far the best show on this list and is sure to have you up all night binge-watching to find out what happens with the characters. I love the different dynamics of the show that are parallel to how the world is run today. It seems a lot of people make it to the lavish lifestyle and don’t look back to figure out a way to tear down a system that has room for everybody but it chooses not to. On the other hand, it is a story that teaches you as the viewer not to give up when all odds are against you and find another way to achieve paradise.
This show has 3 seasons and by far I am in love with the first two. The fourth and final season airs this Friday 8/14. You have time to binge before the big premiere.

The Floor is Lava (Game Show)
Reality show competition where the object is to get from one side of the room to the next without touching the floor because the Floor is LAVA!!! Each episode consists of 3 teams of 3 people vying to win 10k and the lava lamp for completing the obstacle course with the most members and the fastest time. This is surely a nail bitter as the contestants slip and slide their way across a slippery slope.

I like this show because of the simplicity of the show until you realize some of the obstacle courses aren’t as easy as it looks. Especially when you have hot lava erupting all over the place making it harder as time passes for you to get to the other side of the room. My rating for this show is a 6 out of 10 because it is a simplistic show to pass the time not a lot happening outside of the personalities of the show. Not to mention the host is a goofball and really seems to be enjoying the job I wish I thought of.

Quantico (Action/Suspense)
Quantico is a “who done it” suspense tv show packed with lots of action. It follows FBI recruit, now agent Alex Parrish in the middle of a blown- up building where she is now on the most wanted list by the very people who hired her. The only problem is Alex is innocent. Follow Alex through intertwining past and present storylines, the tribulations of clearing her name, and weeding out who at Quantico wanted to take her down and frame her in this action-packed series. All 3 seasons are on Netflix. Click here for more details.

I would like to say I rate Quantico’s first season a solid 10 for the storyline and keeping me on the edge of my seat. Season 2 is nice as well but I would give it a close 8. I will let you be the judge of season 3.

*Shadow (Action/Suspense)
Shadow is an ex-cop with a superhero persona, the ability to not feel pain. He is on the hunt to solve the mystery of a tragic loss that has been eluded by the Johannesburg police since it happened.

Shadow is a good show because he is as close to a superhero that is believably possible. It’s a breath of fresh air to finally get a show that is as close to that can actually happen then a yeah, right moment. The acting in this show is pretty good as well. I rate this show an 8.

Containment (Sci Fi)
This show is about a race against the clock to contain a virus outbreak in a major metropolitan area. They shut off a section of the city to the rest of the world. The only problem is, it is the people on the outside of the wall that are the most dangerous.

Nail BITER!!!!! Caution this show is a fine line between real possibility and real possibility. I said it twice on purpose because the virus outbreak is so similar to what we are experiencing today with the Corona Virus. If you have paranoia than you may want to steer clear of this show until the pandemic is over. If not proceed with caution, especially if you live in Atlanta. I do not want to give too much away. Just know by the time you get to the middle of the series, you will not want to turn the show off until you finish.
My rating for this show is a solid 10. Maybe, it’s the eerie parallel’s in this story compared to the world around us today. This show was made in 2016, 4 years ahead of our pandemic, just in case there are any doubts of conspiracy theories.

Sugar Rush (Cooking)
This has to be the best head to head contender baking show that rivals the ones on the food network. Each episode has a different cast of four teams comprised of two people who are under a time crunch to bake their butts off for hopes at winning the 10k prize for the last team standing. Each episode has a different baking challenge theme. I have included a picture of a cool looking cake that not only wowed the judge's eyes but their taste buds as well. I must warn do not watch this show on an empty stomach. I rate this show a 9. Whenever I feel the urge to click on a cooking show on Netflix I find my fingers in a rush to click on more of Sugar Rush. It is in its 3rd season.

Skin Decisions: Before and After (Plastic Surgery and Dermatology Documentary)
Skin Decisions follow the patient's journey to get the impossible done with minimal to no surgery with the help of a surgeon and a nurse. It is amazing what they accomplish without actually going under the knife. Also, they use plastic surgery for a great cause to help heal old wounds due to tragedy.

We see so much of the bad side of surgery because the addictions are always on broadcast. After all, the results made an otherwise normal-looking person unrecognizable. I like this show because it shows surgery for a good cause. These two ladies want to help heal tragedy and misfortunes that happen in life. I rate this show a 7.
