How to Murder Mystery Dinner: The Details

This short and sweet blog details everything you will need to host a murder mystery dinner at your home. Of course, in my DWMAD style, on a budget. Murder Mystery packets can be as much as $75 to play the game. I have linked two below. These posts are FREE. One is for the whole family to play, age 10 and up. The other is for tweens and teens to play. Make sure you and your family get dressed up, get into character, and most importantly have fun!

The first thing you want to do is set the atmosphere. Figure out how many “rooms” you will need and divide those rooms in half. A tip I have that is cheap to do is if you need four rooms to complete your game and only have three, go to the dollar store and buy a black table cloth and suspend it from the ceiling to section off your third room into two rooms. If you have not checked out my Youtube video, I give ideas on how to set the table for your meal. That’s the most important piece of it and where a lot of the details for solving the mystery get discussed. Sorry to spoil your fun, but as the host or hostess of the evening, it is your job to host the event so you will already know who the murderer is. Have no fear, it will be fun just hosting and moving the game and the evening along.

Next on the list is the food. Food can get expensive rather quickly, so I have a great meal besides pizza that not only tastes great but gives up my hack to my family and friends reading this that when they eat this meal this is my cheap meal. Chicken Alfredo paired with bread and a Caesar salad is a great way to accomplish this. It doesn’t take many steps to prepare this meal either. Another idea for an inexpensive course for dessert is brownies. You can pop those in the oven with a timer so you will not forget about them.

Lastly, make sure you pay attention to how many courses you may need. Some games require a cocktail or nightcap course. I have discovered two great cocktail recipes. One is a chocolate cocktail, via the spruceeats.com called death by cocktail. The other is a fruity cocktail, via the spruceeats.com called Corpse Reviver No. 2 Cocktail. Make sure you get as fun and creative with everything. I plan on naming my cocktails to fit the theme of my murder mystery dinner.

If you are playing with mostly kids or are hosting a kid-themed dinner these cute jack o lantern drinks were a great hit at my party last year and only have two ingredients. More time was spent drawing the pumpkin faces on these cups from party city, then pouring the drink.

The only ingredients you need for the jack o lantern drinks are orange Fanta and vanilla ice cream. They taste like a creamsicle and my kids loved them!

I have a few more quick tips to mention. Since I am playing the hostess of the evening and there is technically not a hostess in the game, I will give myself and name and a persona to fit in with the evening. Make sure that someone that does not live at the house or is not the obvious pick is the murder. A lot of your guest will always assume someone that lives at the house is the murderer. I plan on making a prize bag for the person that guesses the who done it and has the facts to prove it. Also, I found these cool potion bottles from Michaels as a party favor to thank everyone for participating in a fantastic evening.

Want to know more information about recipes or other cheap dish ideas? Comment below. If you plan on trying any of these ideas let me know in the comments as well. I would love to hear your stories. Until next blog.

-XOXO

Ashley
