Budget Friendly: 4 Laundry Room Make Over Tips

Updated: Aug 27, 2020

This blog will give you 4 budget friendly tips to make your laundry room look brand new and feel refreshed. There is nothing like a fresh coat of paint on the walls that screams, brand new.

Go on and slap a new coat of paint on the walls. However, before you do, you can either purchase paint or do like I did for my client’s laundry room update and use an existing paint color that they already own. This client used this paint color in a secondary bathroom they don’t visit very often. This color is perfect because they will not get bored or tired of seeing the color. That is key to choosing colors that currently exists in the home for your clients. You want to be ever so careful that you choose a color that they love and do not see often.

A second tip for a budget laundry makeover is shop at places like TJ Maxx, Homegoods, or my little secret, The Lakeside Collection. They are web based and sell everything from homegoods, toys for the kids, holiday décor, clothing and more at affordable prices. I love this site for stylish laundry room organization especially. They have cute little trinkets to keep your laundry room orderly and fashionable. I love these Laundry room tidy cups. You get 2 for $10. You cannot beat that. I need to go to this website right now and order these for my laundry room.

Speaking of an orderly and fashionable laundry room, they can also double as a place to keep other house hold items. That is where TJ maxx and Homegoods come in especially. That brings me to tip #3. Buy bins to keep paper towels or larger electronic items in if you have a laundry near the kitchen. It keeps the laundry space having one cohesive look. In addition, it doubles the space. My client has multiple uses for her laundry room because it is located near her kitchen. We added extra shelving space and these baskets. I wanted to make sure it was easy for her to locate her things as well as give visual relaxation to the eye. I divided her shelves into daily necessities. I have included the breakdown of the storage and these shelves under their respective pictures below.

(As Pictured: These bins run between $12.99 and $16.99, depending on the size. The client had the galvanized basket prior to the reno. The woven baskets and wooden lid containers are from TJ Maxx/ Homegoods. The smaller baskets are $12.99 and the bigger baskets are $16.99. The container with the wooden lids were $7.99.)

As Pictured:

Top Picture. Top shelf (from left to right) houses kitchen appliances or kitchen supplies that are not in use everyday. The first basket, houses oversized pots and pans. The middle does not have a basket but instead is a neat stack of items that are too big and bulky for the baskets or may otherwise not allow the baskets to fit onto the shelf. Like the griddle, it would not fit in any of the basket and allow for enough clearance to fit onto the shelf. The final basket to the right, has all her small kitchen appliances such as her deep fryer.

Middle Picture. Middle Shelf (from left to right) I have included house hold items. The basket on the left contains paper goods and trash bags. The center basket is my hold all basket. This basket includes a variety of things such as extension cords, light bulbs, painting supplies, etc. Anything that doesn’t fit into the category of the other baskets I placed here. The last basket holds paper towels.

Bottom Picture. Bottom Shelf (from left to right) I placed gain pods in the first container over the washer. The dryer sheets dwell in the container on the right. The middle, this amazing 24 hour laundry sign, doubles as hiding space for a galvanized storage bin that contains cleaning supplies the client previously had.

Now that we have our bases covered with a fresh coat of paint, baskets and shelves as needed, one last tip. Tip #4, add laundry room signs to bring your space together. That’s the sprinkles on top of the cupcake as my friend would say. I have added two signs to this laundry room. The first sign is a symbols guide that I found at hobby lobby for just $5!!! The other sign I found at Kirkland’s for $15 during there 4th of July Sale. Depending on your space and wall, I would say you should not add any more than three signs. You don’t want your wall signs to overcrowd your space or look like the Neon Museum in Las Vegas.

I did want to make an honorable mention if you are planning on going all the way with your reno like I did for my client. I found these square vinyl pieces at home depot for $19.99 a box. They are peel and stick and fit over the existing floor. They come ten in a box. We used about a box and a quarter to complete this job.

I have included before and after pictures of this laundry room update below. I was able to save big on the budget for this laundry reno as I incorporated a few existing things the client already had: the paint, the rug, and the galvanized basket. I purchased the signs ($20), the flooring ($40), the baskets($84), the shelves ($48), the brackets I used 3 of them ($27) and the braces for the shelves ($54). I only spent $273 out of a $500 budget. That’s a $227 savings!!!! I was happy about this reno especially because the client wanted to buy a new dryer and still wanted a complete laundry overhaul. I was able to give them this complete overhaul by doing those few budget friendly steps. They even had enough funds left over to get a light ($60)! I have included before and after pictures of this laundry room update. Let me know what you think in the comments of this budget friendly DIY below and if this post has inspired you to get your reno on!

I would love to hear your stories. Until next blog.
